How To Measure The Height Of Your 4x4?

Recording before and after

The best way to get the most from your 4x4 is by correctly measuring the static ride height before making any modifications or raising the suspension.

WHY MEASURE

The benefit of recording the ride height of your 4WD is being able to easily identify any changes in the suspension height over time. You might claim the 4WD has sagged up to 2” when in reality it could be closer to 10mm (or vice versa.) By having a benchmark measurement, it allows a more tailored approach to building the perfect suspension package for your needs.

HOW TO MEASURE

  • 1) Bottom of wheel to guard: This is the most accurate way to measure ride height
  • 2) Middle of wheel to guard: Good, but not accurate as you need to approximate the centre of the wheel
  • 3) Ground to guard: BAD IDEA! Air pressure, tyre profile, rim / tyre size will alter the final measurement

WHEN TO MEASURE

It is best to record the ride height when you first buy the vehicle. When adding accessories or fitting a suspension kit, having access to these before-and-after specs can be priceless.

Firstly, record the date, wheel corner measurements and wheel/tyre size (this is for reference next time you check if changed). Make note of what is on the vehicle such as a bulbar or winch and even go one step further by taking a picture of the vehicle to use as a visual reference. This recorded info from the install is cold hard proof, instead of guessing and relying on memory.
